Ryken doesn't disappoint us in his exposition

As expected, Dr. Ryken doesn't disappoint us in his exposition. I am finding this an invaluable resource in my study of this extraordinary book of the OT. Whether you are preparing sermons, Bible studies, or simply want a deeper appreciation of God's active grace in covenant.....the Reformed Expository Commentary series will aid in your quest!

Excellent Commentary

The Reformed Expository Commentary is a series that aims to provide a fresh exposition of the Biblical text for today's generation. In the series introduction the series editors (Phil Ryken & Richard Phillips) lay out the four fundamental commitments in this series. They are:
1) To be biblical - that is to pay careful attention to the text and exposit the Scriptures. There is less focus on the original language and structure and more focus on the story that the passage is telling.
2) Unashamedly Doctrinal - this series approaches the text from a Reformed perspective, as found in the Bible.
3) Redemptive-Historical - this means that they believe in the unity and continuity of the Bible, and interpret it in a Christ centered approach for all of Scripture.
4) Practical - by applying the truths found in the Scriptures to contemporary challenges in life.
Just a brief comment on aesthetics. This Commentary also looks great. While this isn't a huge selling point, and certainly not a reason to chose one commentary over another, I must say that this one looks really nice on the bookshelf, especially when you have more than one in the series.
Philip Graham Ryken is the contributor for the volume on 1 Kings and I was thoroughly blessed by his contribution. His exposition is very readable for pastor and layman alike. This commentary, just like others in the series, reads like a book. I think it would be wonderful for sermon preparation, personal study or as a devotional read. Ryken divides the book into three clear parts. Part one focuses on King Solomon. Ryken provides a helpful look at Solomon's successes and failures and helps the reader look forward to our final King, Jesus. A great example of this comes in his section on the cloud descending on the finished temple in 1 Kings 8. First Ryken helps us to see just how holy and glorious God is. He states, "the temple was the one place on earth where people could go and meet with God, through the ministry of a priest. But when the temple was finally open for business, no none could enter because God was too glorious! The true and living God cannot be put in a box, even a box as beautiful as Solomon's temple." He continues, "this cloud was infinitely the most glorious thing at the temple, which for all its golden splendor was made glorious only by the presence of God." What a challenging statement even for us today. For, "unless the Lord is with us, none of the work we do in the church - none of the teaching and preaching, none of the caring and sharing, none of the mercy work or missionary evangelism - will make any difference for the kingdom of God." Just as the temple was useless unless God was in it, so to the church (the people) are useless unless God is behind and directing their actions. What a wonderful application for modern day readers! Ryken also shows the eschatological implications of the presence of God in the temple. Just as these OT people saw God's glory, the disciples too saw God's glory at Jesus' transfiguration, and we now see God's glory through His revealed Word...One day we will all fully see His glory when "we are ushered into the glorious presence of God." What a wonderful thought to dwell on!
Part two focuses on the divided kingdom. Many times sections like this can be looked over in the Bible as just a historical account of what took place. While this is true, it is helpful for us to see what caused these troubles (men trying to do things their way instead of God's) and to find appropriate applications for our lives. Here Ryken is helpful in doing just that. Part three focuses on the prophet Elijah and is helpful just like section two, but in the opposite direction. Often times when we see "successful" people in the Bible we can tend to focus on their character and achievements and overlook God. Ryken points the reader to a great and powerful God working through Elijah, not God being fortunate enough to have Elijah on His team. This is an important distinction that has many practical implications in our daily lives, the most obvious being: Do I rely on my own strength or on God's power? Elijah provides a wonderful testimony of the power of God working through an obedient, although not perfect man.
If you enjoy studying the Word of God and are looking for a solid commentary that is readable and will profit you greatly, then do yourself a favor and purchase this commentary. Ryken helps to expound the Old Testament text, show how and where it points to Christ, our ultimate King, and provide helpful application for 21st century readers. It is well worth it and would make a wonderful companion to the book of 1 Kings.

This is a great series of commentaries. He is able to take the verses in chunks based on related narratives and pull in Samuel, Chronicles and other books of the Bible to expand the related information to increase my knowledge of the 1 Kings. Then he used current examples to relate the lessons and understanding of how this is important to my understanding today. I felt that the examples and information really gave me a bigger picture of the history of Israel and how that brought the narrative of redemption to a fulfillment. Dr. Ryken did a good job of making the material readable and understandable without being redundant or overusing information. These commentaries are extremely helpful and useful.
