n 1973 a young man finds unusual objects at a yard sale in the historic district of Fayetteville, Arkansas, which lead him through a series of eerie coincidences and twists and turns to the story of Leslie Stringfellow, who was born in Texas just after the conclusion of the Civil War. Leslie’s untimely death at age nineteen resulted in what his well-educated parents regarded as successful attempts to make contact with their dead son through private s�ances held nightly in their own home.



Once established, contact continued nightly for over fifteen years. With the help of their dead son, Henry Martyn and Alice Stringfellow recovered a lost inheritance, learned immediately the last words of one of their own parents when he died over a thousand miles away, and adopted and raised a two-year-old orphan girl who grew up to become an active suffragist, newspaper editor, and publicity director for the largest women’s organization of the early twentieth century.



During the years of contact with what the Stringfellows believed to be their departed son, they received thousands of s�ance messages through “automatic writing” in which the young man described his personal afterlife and provided detailed descriptions of the geography of paradise.

When Alice Stringfellow was eighty years old and widowed, she decided to write about her experiences with Leslie with the help of her adopted daughter. In 1919 the two women contacted Sir Arthur Conan Doyle who read their manuscript and sent them two letters, one handwritten, encouraging them to publish it. The creator of the Sherlock Holmes stories even proposed an experiment that involved his own deceased son, Kingsley Doyle, who was killed in World War I. These letters are published here for the first time.



This book is the result of years of extensive research by Stephen Chism, associate librarian at the University of Arkansas, who was the young man at the yard sale in 1973. Chism documents the objective facts of the story and provides historical background on the widespread practice of spiritualism in the American South during the close of the nineteenth century.

Captivating

I read metaphysical books in hopes of learning something. However, when I can learn something and be entertained at the same time, as was the case with this book, it's a real treat. Reading this book was like watching a good movie. I could picture the characters, their homes, and their environment as the story unfolded. I'd have to rank it as one of the two most entertaining metaphysical books I have read - right up there with "The Boy Who Saw True."

This 2005 book is based on a 1926 book, "Leslie's Letters to His Mother," by Alice Stringfellow. That book resulted from afterlife communication received from Leslie Stringfellow, who had died in 1886, at age 19. The "letters" came by means of automatic writing through a planchette to Leslie's parents, Alice and Henry Stringfellow. Although the communications began soon after his death and continued for some 15 years, Alice's book was not published until 1926, as she did not think it would be of interest to anyone. As it was, only a hundred or so copies were published, mostly for family members.

Henry and Alice Stringfellow were no country bumpkins. Henry was a world-renowned horticulturist, having graduated from the College of William and Mary before earning graduate degrees in both theology and law. Alice was a graduate of Hunter College in New York. Leslie's death hit them hard. While visiting a medium in Galveston, they were directed by spirit to invest in a planchette - a device that holds a pencil and is moved by the communicating spirit as the hands of the two sitters rest on it. "Neither Alice nor Henry believed they had any control over the movement of the instrument," author Stephen Chism offers. "The Stringfellow's letter-writing sessions were to become a secret family ritual which lasted for over 15 years."

Chism, a librarian at the University of Arkansas, tells of the synchronistic events that led to the discovery of the 1926 book and then details his research into the history of the Stringfellow family. "As he was dying, Leslie claimed he could see light from Heaven," Chism writes. "He promised Alice that he would contact her `if such a thing were possible.'"

In 1897, Leslie encouraged his parents to adopt a child, a distant relative who had been orphaned at age two, as he felt they were too dependent on hearing from him. He wanted them to concentrate on living this life rather than constantly thinking about joining him in the next one. The child would be renamed "Lessie" and would go on to become a reporter and editor in Fayetville, Arkansas. It was Lessie who helped her mother put together their many letters into a book.

In his "letters" Leslie tells of his active life on his side of the veil. He states that he was weak when he first arrived on the other side, but he quickly regained his strength. "Here every man's home is an index of his character [on the material plane]" he informs them, pointing out that a large number of souls are stuck in the lower planes of existence. However, while he realized that there were many spheres or planes above him he informed them that he was very content. "Never doubt for a moment that this world is a thousand time better in every way than yours," Leslie continues. "When I compare even my happy life on earth with what I now have, I can but see the contrast."

Leslie's messages are consistent with messages received by other credible mediums, pointing to an evolution of the spirit through higher and higher spheres rather than a humdrum heaven and horrific hell.

It is a fascinating and captivating read. Every hospice should have several copies of this book available for its residents.

The American Spiritualist Experience

The phenomenon known as the Spiritualist movement that sprang out of the finger lake district of New York state from the area historians call the "burned over" district due to the variety of spiritual/religious epiphanies that swept the area, beginning with the Shakers, Jemima Wilkinson, Mormons and the Fox sisters among other evangelical social outbursts. What made Spiritualism the more attractive of these spiritual expressions was the progressive mindset the movement enunciated, which included abolition, feminism, humane childhood education, and dietary reform among others.
Perhaps the most significant innovation was the elevation of women within spiritialism to positions of authority, spiritual as well as temporal. This along with the Shaker movement was the first time in centuries that women held positions of power equal to that of men within a religious movement.
The other innovation with the advent of spiritualism was the shift from the "church" being a special building for religious endeavors to the American home as church. It was not unintentional that many spiritualists refer to their activities within a "home circle" down to this day. Spiritualism provided for the first democraticization of religion that appealed to the sensibilities of Jeffersonian democracy from which it sprang.
Mr. Chism has provided a great insight into this with the discovery of a family's documented automatic writing sessions initially, used to make contact with the son of the family, Leslie Stringfellow and the subsequent psychonautic communiques within the family that provided comfort, solace and intellectual stimulation on the nature of the soul and the afterlife through these alleged communications for the family.
For students of 19th century religious movements, spiritualists or students of parapsychology this book is a gift to treasure.

Truly a WONDERFUL Book, a "Must Read"....

Thoroughly enjoyable historical and spiritually uplifting book about the afterlife as told through the letters received by a mother from her deceased son over a period of 15 years. Explains the family history, how the author had a connection with the deceased through a series of odd "coincidences", and then afterlife as the young man experiences it. The book also does a wonderful job of telling the story of the history of the Spiritualist movement that is still so relevant today. This is a book every truth-seeker should own! I've read many books of this genre and this is right up there with, Thy Son Liveth: Message from a Soldier to His Mother, and that was made into a movie, A Rumor of Angels with Vanessa Redgrave. This is a most outstanding book, only too bad it is out of print! I'm hoping the author will reprint and get it into Kindle format, too.

Writing is uneven....but provides important food for thought

I saw the comment on this book made by Martin Tracey and thought twice about purchasing the book. I went ahead and purchase it. I am about half way through it as I write this comment. I was put off by the dismissiveness of Dr. Tracey's comment. I did a Google search on him and discovered that he is a molecular biologist at Florida International University and is quite knowledgible about techniques for sequencing and characterizing DNA. I also know a bit about these techniques myself and about calculating probabilities. That said, I see merit in Dr. Tracey's comment. But I also see merit in the discussion presented the author Erin Murphy. Dr. Tracey's comment is directed towards a surprise experienced by an analysts in the Arizona state crime laboratory. The analysts found that two DNA profiles in the crime lab's DNA database matched at nine places, even though these individuals were unrelated to each other. A further examination of the database revealed 122 sets of such 9-point matches. Dr. Tracey writes that Prof Murphy "ignorantly assumes that the 1 in N odds for a random match to one person, are the same as looking form matches in the entire data base." His interpretation of what Prof. Murphy did is incorrect. Prof Murphy discussion later in the chapter shows that she is well aware of the differences in the probability that a database will contain a match to a given individual versus the probability of finding matches when all profiles in the database are compared against each other. She does this by mentioning the "birthday problem". The birthday problem supposes you are in a group of 25 people. There is about 1 chance in 15 that someone in that group will share your birthday, but there is a very high probability, that two random people in that group will have the same birthday. (In any group of 25 people, there are 300 sets of birthdate comparisons that can be done between any two random people in the group.)

I agree with Dr. Tracey's calculation that in the Arizona Crime Lab Database, there are 2 billion possible comparisons of the DNA profiles between two individuals. And he raises a legitimate question regarding whether it would be unusual to find some matches between profiles. But how many should one expect. Prof. Murphy states that 122 such matches were eventually found. She also states that the probability of finding a random match of two profiles from non-Hispanic whites was estimated at 1 in 754 million. The random match probability between two African Americans was estimated at 1 in 561 billion and between two Southwest Hispanics at 1 in 113 trillion. Given these three estimates of random probability matches, a then perhaps one could expect to find within that database, at most, maybe 3 or 4 matches....WELL SHORT OF 122. One explanation is that the occurrence of particular DNA markers is not as random as the people calculating the probabilities assume. That is, there may be significant correlation in the occurrence of certain markers, and if this correlation is not properly represented in the calculation of probabilities of a match, the calculation gives a misleading result. I cannot agree with Dr. Tracey that the discussion of the Arizona database is silly. Quite the opposite, I find it flags a serious problem and one that has the potential to result in many, many injustices.

I do find the book uneven. For example, Prof. Murphy takes great pains to explain the methodology of DNA typing at a level that a non-technical person can understand. In my view she fails at that effort. But the basic thrust of the book is to argue that the powerfulness of DNA typing is often oversold. She is arguing that the risk of convicting the innocent is much higher than the general public has been led to believe. She cites errors committed in laboratories that have led to their being shut down. She cites failures to follow protocols when adding DNA profiles to databases. She cites the ambiguities that often occur when trying to tease out DNA profiles from samples that contain a mixture of DNA. She cites the persistence of DNA in the environment that can cause confusion as to when the DNA found in a sample was actually left behind. To illustrate this point, she discusses a murder case in which a DNA profile was recovered from a crime scene sample was matched to someone who had been dead for several years. The dead individual was later determined to have been involved in the construction of the building. Then there is the problem of match probabilities that I tried to illustrate above, coupled with the use of software to calculate the probabilities, where the algortihm used to do the calculation is proprietary and is therefore unavailable to mathematicians/statisticians who might want to verify as to whether the software is making correct calculations.

Despite all these issues, Prof. Murphy does not argue that we should throw out DNA evidence. Rather, she argues that we need to have better standards on its interpretation, and we need to reconsider how to calculate the probability that the DNA profile found from a crime scene sample would match that off the defendant on trial. Sometimes Prof. Murphy is inelegant in her discussion. But in my view her central argument has great merit and needs further exploration.

A Revelation

I admit that prior to reading this I accepted DNA results pretty much without question. This book made my hair stand on end and yours will, too. Wish there was something less than one star to rate this boo

Theres this old line - If a man wrote a book on how to lose and it did very bad, could it be called it a success?
And today after reading Sin To Win, Ive come to ask myself just that.
What made me buy the book was its gleamy evil look. I love books on corporate power and powerful relationships. A book I loved is Robert Greene's 48 LAws of power.
The next book i bought - Sin to win has been a complete disaster.
I havent read any other of the authors and pray i never do so.
The book has a feel of being written while under the influence of alcohol. Ofcourse the deadly sins are good but it didnt have to be proved practically on the content.
Some sections inspire. Like Anger and how it can be used productively.
But the rest makes me feel like eating my leg while piercing my ears with red hot needles [phrase taken from the book];)
Two most annoying features of the book are, one, the author talks of incidents and stories which are mostly unrelated to the context and worse at times contradictory to the point he is making
And two, the language.
I wouldnt want to be taught or even be spoken to by a person who loves using words like _... substitution_ and _nice, slow ... job_ in his text as if he was describing the engineering of a Jag Engine which he claims is made by Ford.
I would strongly recommend against this book unless the reader desperately needs to find a preson who is worse than the worst he knows

A great read for all Reagan aficionados

Anne Edwards depicts Ronald Reagan and his early years as well as any author whom I have read, including Ronald Reagan, himself. In his two autobiographies, "Where's the Rest of Me" and "An American Life," Reagan gave us a glimpse of his early years and of Reagan, himself, as he saw things and as he saw himself. Thanks to Ms. Edwards' in-depth research and extensive interviews, we now get to see Ronald Reagan and his life and times through the eyes of those who grew up with him, watched him grow up, went to school with him, worked with him, or simply knew him during his formative years.

I was particularly taken with the thoroughness of Chapters 1-13, which covered the growing-up and coming-of-age years. Where else could one learn that Ronald Reagan first applied for a library card (or number) at the age of ten, on December 20, 1921, that he was given number #3695, that he averaged two books a week, that they were mostly adventures, and that he usually checked them out on weekends? Or, that his mother, Nelle, was thought my many in Dixon to be a faith healer? Or that the log on which he notched his 77 "saves" as a lifeguard at Lowell Park was washed away years later when the Rock River flooded.

These early chapters were presented in a delightfully even-handed manner. But, beginning with Chapter 14 the author seemed to change her tenor. Much to my dismay, she appeared to abandon her previous objectivity and become a critic of both the Senate Select Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC), throwing in her own pejoratives, and of Reagan's motion pictures and career in general. Even so, however, she provides the most detailed and complete explanation of this period of Reagan's life that I have thus far come across.

In the early chapters of the book,1-13, the author paints a vivid and thoughtful picture of the young Ronald Reagan. Anyone seeking to understand Reagan, the man, will certainly find these chapters to be enjoyable and enlightening. Those interested in all aspects of Reagan's life and career will find the remainder of the book to be equally well researched and just as informative. And, because of the author's thoroughness and attention to detail, the reader will likely be able to put many events during Reagan's early life in proper perspective. Bottom line: This is a great book.

The Youth, The Actor, The Union Leader...The Budding Politician

Ronald Reagan is one of those figures who present two lives to the biographer, frequently leading to biographies that focus on one aspect or another. "Early Reagan" is different in that it tells his story from birth to the eve of his entry into full time politics, encompassing his youth, movie career and his gradual immersion into public affairs.

Many think of Reagan as a movie actor who used his acting skills to build a second career in politics. That is true to an extent, but author Anne Edwards shows that for Reagan politics was a part of his life from his earliest days. Born to an alcoholic Irish American father and a devout Protestant mother, "Dutch's" early life in Illinois was one of hard time supported by domestic stability. From his father Dutch learned an abhorrence of intolerance and an interest in politics. From his mother he gained his lifelong religious faith. Coming of age in the Depression, Dutch early learned to make his own way, spending summers as a life guard, and playing football in High School and at Eureka College. While majoring in economics at Eureka he became involved in student government and issues affecting the administration of the College. In his youth he became a strong Democrat and supporter of Franklin D. Roosevelt. His search for employment led him to Iowa where he became a radio announcer, including a stint as a Cubs broadcaster.

After making his way to Hollywood, Reagan became an employee of Warner Brothers where he became a staple of "B" movies. During this time he became involved in the Screen Actors Guild which he would serve as president for six years. I had always thought of his union presidency as a figurehead position of a rather insignificant organization. On the pages of this book we read of his leadership in negotiations with the studios, his struggles against Communist infiltration and his management of strikes during his tenure. The reader comes away with an impression of Reagan as one very involved in important issues of professional and national significance.

This was the time of his life during which Reagan loved, lost and won: first girlfriends in Dixon and Iowa then his first wife, Jane Wyman. Edwards depicts Wyman and Reagan as being incompatible teammates whose divergent interests and careers made a failure of their marriage. Then came Nancy. This book examines Nancy's story that she first came to Ronnie for help in distancing herself from another Nancy Davis who was associated with Communist front organizations. Edwards suggests that the story of their first meeting does not seem plausible, but however they met, theirs was a love story with which we have become familiar.

During his acting career and union service, Reagan was influenced by multiple conservative figures in and out of the field. Many suggested that he seek political office. His own principles were becoming more important than his party allegiance as he gradually shifted toward the Republican Party. As early as 1950 he abandoned the Democrats to support Richard Nixon for U.S. Senator.

One fact that I found to be interesting was Reagan's service in the horse cavalry between the wars. This helped him develop his equestrian skills and secured him a place in the Army when World War II came.

After the war Reagan had his period of most intense union activity as his movie career was winding down. He found employment in television, with General Electric Theatre and Death Valley Days, as well as a spokesman for General Electric. During his travels to G.E. facilities he honed his political message and generated a legion of voters who heard him, met him and would later support him. At the end of the book Reagan has just about completed his transition from actor to politician, as he gave "The Speech", "A Time for Choosing" in support of Barry Goldwater on October 27, 1964.

I found this book to be very well written. It held my interest throughout and I learned much about Reagan that I did not previously know and gained a much greater appreciation for the man he was before he became president. This makes it a very enjoyable and worthwhile read.

This book is an interesting exploration of the life of Ronald Reagan from childhood through the time he becomes Governor of California. It is well-researched, balanced, and complete in its scope. I had always wondered how a person might go from B actor to President, and this book helped fill in the blanks.

Without that training, people live "at the mercy of our moods." Meditation is the tool that can help spiritual seekers master, rather than be mastered by, their own minds. This book blends a philosophically savvy explanation of why meditation is necessary with an artful and accessible introduction to the basics of meditation. Mipham moves elegantly from the prosaic (how to sit with a straight spine) to the profound (why one should bravely contemplate illness, aging and death). Indeed, those practicing spiritual disciplines from any tradition-Christian, Wiccan, and so forth-could benefit from Mipham's commonsense approach to meditation. Mipham is director of Shambhala International, an umbrella organization representing over 100 meditation and study centers that was founded by his father, the renowned spiritual leader Chogyam Trungpa. His first book offers basic guidelines to meditation or peaceful abiding for those interested in learning more about Buddhist meditation. His instruction and discussion of the virtues of peaceful abiding are followed by suggestions for thematic contemplative meditations on topics such as birth, old age, and death. Having grown up in the United States but with traditional Tibetan training, Mipham is able to connect the traditional practice with the Western mind-set. He also brings a youthful spirit to his writing, with frequent use of outdoor sports (e.g., horseback riding, archery, golf, and hiking) to embellish his teachings metaphorically. Unfortunately, this work lacks the passion and depth so notable in his father's writings, and the text breaks little new ground. Those new to Tibetan Buddhism will find more inspirational reading in books by the Dalai Lama, and there is more in-depth instruction on Tibetan meditation practices in works such as Geshe Kelsang Gyatso's A Meditation Handbook. Recommended for libraries with large Buddhist collections.

I have had this book for a few months and I am on my second read. I suspect I will read this over and over again over time. The value is to help understand what you'll be experiencing as you meditate, which gives you a sense of calm in the face of your various experiences, and also helps prevent any sense of discouragement or jittery anticipation for what may come next. I would say that this book, which was recommended by a local Shambhala center, will be central to my contemplation library.

Private Edward Lynch enlisted in the army aged just eighteen. As his ship set sail for France, the band played ‘Boys of the Dardanelles’ and the crowd proudly waved off their young men – men who had no notion of the reality of the trenches of the Somme; of the pale-faced, traumatized soldiers they would encounter there; of the mud and blood and the innumerable contradictions of war.

Upon his return from France in 1919, Private Lynch recorded his experiences on the Western Front in twenty school exercise books, perhaps in the hope of making sense of and coming to terms with all that he had witnessed. Edited and published here for the first time, Lynch’s story is a rare and precious find: a personal account that vividly captures the horror and magnitude of the First World War, written from the perspective of an ordinary infantryman.

About the Author
Edward Lynch was born in 1898 and after serving in France with the 45th Battalion of the First Australian Imperial Force from 1916-19, he returned to Australia and became a teacher. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he joined the militia before transferring to the regular army where he was Officer Commanding the NSW jungle training school. After the war, he returned to teaching until his retirement. He died in 1980. Editor Will Davies is a film-maker and military historian. He lives in Sydney.

Fantastic first person insight.

A lot of people say that this book doesn't have the correct articulation or depth of character, I'll address that in this review.
There is speculation as to whether or not this is his personal memoirs, whether it was written in hindsight or from a journal.
I honestly believe this book is from both a personal journal and from hindsight. The references, the chronological memory of battalions, units and dates of relief generally spells that this is part of his own journal, the depth of the before and after writing of action also reeks of journal entries or letters, the action themselves would probably be hindsight. The parts that show deep reflection in moments of action and confusion, are quite clearly hindsight added in.

The lack of character depth and description in some parts of the book, make sense to me that this is his own experience, because throughout the book he mentions, several times, that in war it's a bad idea "to be one of the thinking type". So, the parts where it goes on about his friends and other unit members as though they are simply 2D characters, is primarily correct for someone who is witnessing the death of quite literally thousands, for them the less you knew about someone, the better. The same with some actions lack description, due to the nature of it, some things like that would not be easy to describe from your own memory.

Honestly recommend this book (Also one called "A Fortunate Life" by Facer) as a genuine no bars held insight into early Australians at war.

The vast majority of my reads are narrative histories by people like Hart, Gilbert and Keenan, among many others. But, I have also read more memoirs than I can remember. this is one of the best. it is up there with Junger and much, much better than Sasson. my only regret is that many more people have not read this book.

lynch claims the book is about a friend of his who he names "Nulla", but it is clearly about him. It is positively amazing that this man could have fought in so many places an d survived. he was at the Somme, Messiness Ridge (Passchendale), the1918 counteroffensive and many other places. he is clearly a thinking man who gives graphic depiction of the horrors of war but without gory sensationalism. The deep and lasting comradery that develops between Nulla and his mates (he is Australian)is touching. Also, the imagery of the environment within which he functions is very well done. Buy this book if a soldiers tale is of any interest to you.

Mud & Blood.

To read a blow by blow account of that, which we who came after think of as mere history, was, to say the least, a rude awakening.
Oh God! Those poor souls that they should suffer such horror & hardship only to die in that frozen mud. I was transfixed by the descriptive passages, the turn of colloquial phrase, the vivid imagery & the emotion brought forth within the text. It transported me into the trenches of the Somme,1916/17, to stand next to those braved & bloodied Australians as they struggled & suffered the depredations of WAR.
Very well written & a monument to the men who suffered & fought through that horror called "The Great War" & later, WWI. TRULY an historical archive that should be read by all those who "Play" at war for fun.

Nice to see an update

I have been delivering data warehousing solutions with the kimball methodology for over 10 years. This version of the book deals with more of the not so perfect world issues we have to deal with. It adds to the design choices available to architects to use.the old books had more of an assumption that businesses will make changes to accommodate the simple modeling processes and many wont. I just hope the ETL book gets a more realistic rewrite soon as well.

Excellent Book

This is an excellent book for both the beginner and the experienced data warehousing professional. Kimball and Ross do a stellar job of explaining the ins and outs of star schema design, which can be quite complex at times. I love their approach, which involves providing examples of business processes and then taking the reader through the thought process of designing star schemas around them. I highly recommend this book to anybody wishing to enter (or who has already entered) the BI industry.

Excellent Enhancement to a Modern Classic

This third edition is greatly expanded from the already excellent second edition of this book. Kimball and Ross apply their vast experience as consultants (who actually deliver) and as educators to this book, providing a reference that is up-to-date, relevant, and most of all that is practical in its application of the principles to real world designs and projects. Practitioners following Kimball methods enjoy a very high success rate.

One of the hallmarks of Kimball Group books is the emphasis on business perspective and successful implementation. The underlying theories are always clearly presented and accessible to the reader, yet the material is framed in the context of delivering real results for real clients. This skillful blend of theory and reality is refreshing and most useful to those who have to deliver.

Perusing the Table of Contents, one finds treatment of many topics in the context of specific industries. Do not make the mistake of assuming these chapters apply only to the specific industries mentioned; instead realize that the industries are used as examples to clarify and amplify the presentation of the underlying design principles. The underlying principles are clearly presented and it is easy to imagine how they apply to other industries. Several other chapters address broader issues, both technical and on the business side. The entire book is up to date with current practice and includes clear discussion of newer topics such as additional Slowly Changing Dimension (SCD) types, and big data, among numerous others.

This book is an excellent resource for those tasked with designing, or managing the design, of quality dimensional data models for real projects with real deadlines. Kimball and Ross deliver, and so does this latest edition.
