Great book.

Great book showing that kids with autism have potential to grow and learn new skills (as well preventing life-long institutionalization). It also points out how Lovaas and colleagues conducted a study in 1987 at UCLA (that was later endorsed by the Surgeon General in 1999) showing 47% of the children with autism obtained a "learning" recovery and were successfully mainstreamed in regular education classrooms. A follow-up study in 1993 showed that 42% 'fully' recovered from the autism spectrum and were indistinguishable from their peers showing typical social and adaptive skills by early adolescence. Every proven treatment - from Risperdal (updated in the 1997 revision manual) to Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention (EIBI) - is in this book. A VERY reliable book on evidence-based intervention which, to this day, remains the 'gold-standard' for ABA training in the treatment of autism. It also points out the need for parents to avoid temptations of becoming involved in non-validated treatments, i.e., Son-Rise (referred to as "Option" therapy in this book, which is nothing more than a marketing scam and the founders brainwash everyone who trains there) and Holding Therapy (developed based on the unproven "Refrigerator Mother" theory once held by the mental health community before 1964).
What's interesting about all of this is: I was Dr. Bobby Newman's first client to ever receive a 40-hour per week, ABA program in a home setting and I didn't speak or respond to my name until I was 4 1/2 years old. Catherine Maurice, also a founding member of the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) and whose kids fully recovered from the autism spectrum (as outlined in her famous 1993 book "Let Me Hear Your Voice: A Family's Triumph Over Autism" featuring forwards by Dr. O. Ivar Lovaas (founder of Discrete Trial Teaching or DTT) and Dr. Bernie Rimland (whose book in 1964 changed the mental health community's perspective on autism and co-founded the Autism Society of America with Dr. Lovaas)), happened to have hired Dr. Newman to be the president of an organization she founded in Great Neck, New York called the Association for Science in Autism Treatment for 3 years. (Dr. Newman was also the former president of the New York State Association for Behavior Analysis (NYSABA) and his wife, Dr. Dana Reinecke, is currently the president elect for the NYSABA for 2016).

Easy to use curriculum guide.

There's a lot of material in this book that is great, from treatment planning to how to recruit employees. There are even flow charts for helping to make behavior intervention decisions, and lots of general use data sheets.
What I get most out of it is the lesson planning material, this book is full of examples of targets for each skill. There's a section on beginning, intermediate and advanced curricula, which can be used on their own, or with other curriculum guides, and each entry is provided a program guide with specific targets, and a print out for the program's data taking. I can print it out, when my assessments indicate the program is called for, and hand it to the interventionist so they have the directions, too.

The go to if you're working with kids on the spectrum

This book is a staple of SLPs in every clinic I've worked for. It has great resources and is broken up into well defined sections. The practical portions (which are a majority of the book) really break down the hierarchy of skills and give clear steps for implementing ABA-style interventions. While not necessarily a speech therapy manual, it is a Godsend for approaching the behavior challenges and beginning to pull out those intervention skills in kiddos with ASDs. Well worth the investment.
