About the Author
Wendy C. Ortiz is the author of EXCAVATION: A MEMOIR (Future Tense Books, 2014) and Hollywood Notebook (Writ Large Press, 2014). Wendy writes the column "On the Trail of Mary Jane" for McSweeney's Internet Tendency. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, The Nervous Breakdown, Vol. 1 Brooklyn, The Rumpus, Specter Magazine, and many other journals. She is co-founder, curator and host of the Rhapsodomancy Reading Series in Los Angeles.

An amazing memoir for CNF lovers

This book has been recommended to me countless times and I don't know what kept me from reading it for so long. This is definitely a stellar addition to the CNF genre and an important read. To excavate is to "unearth methodically in an attempt to discover information about the past" and that is exactly what Wendy C. Ortiz does. The timeline jumps around, so that you are simultaneously walking with Wendy, the young girl who is mixed up in a confusing relationship with her older teacher, and Wendy, the wise woman who has healed and seen the ways her past choices have manifested, disappeared, morphed, reinforced. It's fascinating. Do not expect a "how-I-survived" kind of book, replete with life lessons and inspiring scenes where she overcomes adversity. This is truly a digging up of the past, a careful laying out of all that transpired, an effort to make sense of the fossils and markings. It unfolds that way because life unfolds that way - we simply keep making mistakes until we stop. It doesn't happen in a flourish or flash of light. One day, we are better, and we're not quite sure how we got there, and that is the strength of Ortiz' storytelling - she wills us to grow up with her, unsure, but ultimately determined.

Beautiful, dark and riveting

Wendy tells the story of her teenage years: beautiful, tender, woven with melancholy and nostalgia, but also a dark and sick secret. She was surprisingly mature for her age, which shows through her observations and writing. But she is still a teenager. And when you take a look from the other side and realize that a school teacher got sexually involved with her - a thirteen year old girl, the shock sets in. On one hand, you have a teenage girl exploring the world and her sexuality and on the other, a pedophile.
Despite having huge problems at home to deal with - alcoholic parents - and the dark secret of her relationship with her teacher, Wendy tells a story of growing up. And I am reminded how, despite all the difficulties and dark moments (I was a victim of bullying for years, bordering on suicide), teenage years are tender and beautiful - the period when we didn't have to work, didn't have to take care of our own life as adults, just listened to music and tried to have fun as much as possible.

I love her rough

What a dramatic, real heart-felt, story of a girl who gets manipulated by a teacher. I love her rough, determined way her story gets told. It's like the author allowed you to see into her deepest, darkest, dirtiest truths with abandon. Riveting story telling. I seriously could not put it down until the very last page.
It could be any number of girls telling us their most vulnerable story and creating a life-as-it-is rendition that makes you really question youth, sexuality, and how one incident can shape our lives forever.
