Increasing competition in the global transformer market has put tremendous responsibilities on the industry to increase reliability while reducing cost. Spotlight on Modern Transformer Design introduces a novel approach to transformer design using artificial intelligence (AI) techniques in combination with finite element method (FEM). Today, AI is widely used for modeling nonlinear and large-scale systems, especially when explicit mathematical models are difficult to obtain or completely lacking. Moreover, AI is computationally efficient in solving hard optimization problems. On the other hand, FEM is particularly capable of dealing with complex geometries, and also yields stable and accurate solutions.

Many numerical examples throughout the book illustrate the application of the techniques discussed to a variety of real-life transformer design problems, including:

• problems relating to the prediction of no-load losses;

• winding material selection;

• transformer design optimisation;

• and transformer selection.

Pavlos S. Georgilakis is currently Assistant Professor at the Production Engineering and Management Department of the Technical University of Crete (TUC), Greece. He has worked in the transformer industry for ten years before joining the TUC. He is the author of two books, more than 50 journal papers and 70 conference papers.

About the Author

Pavlos S. Georgilakis is currently assistant professor in the production engineering and management department of the Technical University of Crete, Greece. He received a diploma in electrical and computer engineering and a PhD from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece in 1990 and 2000 respectively. In his doctoral thesis, entitled "Contribution of Artificial Intelligence Techniques in the Reduction of Distribution Transformer Iron Losses", he introduced the concept of artificial intelligence in transformer design.

He worked in the transformer industry for 10 years before joining academia. From 1994 to 2003 he was with Schneider Electric AE, where he worked as transformer quality control engineer for one year, transformer design engineer for four years, transformer research and development manager for three years, and marketing manager for two years. He has considerable experience in the design, development, and manufacturing of transformers.

Assistant Professor Georgilakis has designed and supervised eight research projects in the field of transformer design, which have been funded by the government and the private sector. He is the author of two books, 40 papers in international journals, and 70 papers in international conference proceedings. His current research interests include transformer design and modeling, artificial intelligence techniques in transformer design and power systems, numerical techniques in the analysis and design of power transformers, and renewable energy sources. He is a member of the IEEE, the CIGRE, and the Technical Chamber of Greece.

(NEWBIE review) Good music, could be better presented

The music available is great.

Although I am new to classical guitar, some of the fingering provided seems erratic. This may be my novice misunderstanding though.

The real problem I had with the book is that some of the pieces, the Menuetts in particular, are not fully named. It took me longer than I like to admit to find which Menuett was Menuett in D Minor, BWV Anh. 132.

As someone who likes to browse through my tab books with YouTube up to discern which pieces I'd like to learn, this was frustrating.

I have the paper copy of this, and it is quite good. The tunes are relatively simple to play and it is generally nicely laid out. Unlike the other reviewers kindle copy this one is easy to use and clearly laid out.

Don't waste your money on the Kindle version!

Total waste of money.
I can't speak about the actual book, or the content, but I purchased the kindle version of this, and it is AWFUL. Amazon needs to set some quality standards here. The font is WAY too small to see, and when I try to zoom in it only gets more blurry. I spent 10 minutes reading through one piece, and had to continuously zoom around the screen to see when my hands should have been on the guitar, and even then I got a headache from the blurriness. It is apparent that the publisher couldn't care less about the ability of its customers to actually use this book, but instead wanted to rush the product to market. My FREE multifunction printer/scanner could do a better job of making legible digital copies of this music.
This was the first bit of music I ordered for kindle (on my ipad), and it will probably be the last, unless in the future someone can assure me that things have changed.
Don't waste your money. Can I return this?

About the Author
Lihong V. Wang, PhD, is Gene K. Beare Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Director of the Optical Imaging Laboratory at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Wang is Chair of the International Biomedical Optics Society. His?Monte Carlo model of photon transport in biological tissues has been used worldwide. He has published more than 120 peer-reviewed journal articles and patents.

HSIN-I WU, PhD, is Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Texas A&M University. He has published more than fifty peer-reviewed journal articles. Dr. Wu was a senior Fulbright scholar and is listed in Outstanding Educators of America. He serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of Biocomplexity and the Editorial Board of BioMedical Engineering OnLine.

The Most Practical Text in the Field

This is probably the most practical text in the field of Biomedical Optics I have ever seen. The first one with practice problems so that a student can test themselves on their knowledge. It is also more coherent and easier to follow than the several texts in this field where each chapter is written by a different author and leaps from topic to topic in a rather fragmentary manner. I'd highly recommend this to professors as a standard textbook for a class.

Practical, pedagogical with some room for improvement

A very pedagogical approach to optical instruments used in biomedical imaging is presented by the author in Biomedical Optics: Principles and Imaging. This text is widely considered to be the most practical text in the field.
I am looking forward to a second edition of the book, which is necessary in this rapidly evolving filed of optics. I would like to see learning outcomes at the beginning of each chapter, a review of the main concepts at the end and possibly a profile of a prominent researcher in each application. For instance: Prof. Wang in photoacoustic tomography, Prof. Yodh in Diffuse Optical Tomography, Prof. Boas in MonteCarlo, Prof. Fujimoto in Optical Coherence Tomography, etc.
A future deluxe edition with color illustrations wouldn't hurt either.

Good start, but needs more polish

Considering what came before, this text is revolutionary. Previously a 'text' on biomedical optics consisted of various papers or transactions bound together in one book. This is a volume that was started with teaching a class in mind and has plenty of good exercises for students. I say 'started' because as a text book it still has a long way to go. The writing style is very dry (a minor qualm) and overly concise - sometimes one wishes the authors expounded on the concepts with more examples or illustrations outside of the mathematics.

Always changing

I am a comic fan and picked this up on the idea that if Peter David found something interesting to write about here I would like to read it. I am a casual Star Trek Next Generation and Deep Space Nine fan and remembered these characters from there. The story itself was great because every time I thought I had figured out the genre IE: Romance, action, science fiction, it changed. The story really is in 3 parts and changes genre in a way that is fulfilling the expectation of each, as it progresses - which I found amazing. The story does delve a bit too far into being gratuitous, some of the one liners and set up for a scene are a bit overt and make you groan. It might be that Diana's race were not accustomed to humans but they didn't tip toe around any of the issues and didn't really sound like how people talk. No one impied or infered anything, they just came out and said what they meant. Character repeadidly use the phrase "What in hell" instead of "what in the hell" which I found irritating. But the narrator, who played his character on the show, did a great job, even of immitating Pickard at time, which was strikingly good. Though he does read slower than most narrators his inflections kept me interested even though there is minimal sound/music fx. All together it was much better than I anticipated to get from my first Star Trek audio book.

I have been acquainted with this book since 15 years ago.I have taught this book for 8 years in undergraduate courses . It is the only book in polymer chemistry which has nearly all the topics relating to polymer chemistry both for beginners and also for advanced level readers .Even though it is old it has many subjects all together that can not be found in another book .I think such topics as engineering subjects and kinetics and also molecular weight equations should be explained more to be more understandable to all and this is the main disadvantages of the book .
