"The Mass of Men Lead Lives of Quiet Desparation"

So wrote Henry David Thoreau in the classic "Walden." After reading Marsha Sinetar's book, you will understand why.
Most people, for a variety of reasons, have been schooled away from listening to their "inner voice," which is there to guide us in the discovery of our inate talents and interests. This is the basis upon which we should be engaging in our "Right Livlihood," a Buddhist term to describe the work that we were destined to do, which is more than just earning a paycheck, but is fulfilling in a Maslow "self-actualization sense," and is in service to humankind.
Ms. Sinetar's masterpiece is written from the perspective of someone who has looked within themselves and has asked themselves the tough questions about the quality of life they are living. She posits that to ignore that inner longing is to basically live in denial, and untrue to yourself. This incongruity, she argues, is the root of a great deal of dissatisfaction that people have with their lives. Hence the admonition, "to thine own self be true," which is the antithesis of the quote from Thoreau.
This book was instrumental for me during a period of major depression that I was experiencing, that I credit it completely in helping me "find my way back," onto my unique path. Space prohibits me from sharing any details, but I will happily correspond anyone who feels that they are in the middle of a midlife, or carerr crisis.
But first, buy this book, heed its admonitions, and prepare for a major change in your life!

Title is all you need to read....

Basically the book tells some stories of people who have done this and succeeded. But for those who are truly concerned about the money following part it doesn't give much comfort. Basically the premise is if you do what you love you will do it so well you will make money at it. Yea, there is something to that theory but it doesn't take a book to say that and there are plenty of people who've found when they try to make a living out of what they love it took all the love out of what they were doing. So, this book doesn't help with anything.

Psychological Help v.s. How to!

This book was written by a psychologist years ago. The information in it is geared more towards ones psychological well being versus serving as a how to guide.

As a psychotherapist, I value the information in it although, becoming psychologically and spiritually healthly takes quite some time. So, if you're looking for a more inspirational down to earth lets play with the dirt book(s) I recomend (and I could hardly put them down) - I don't know What I Want but I Know it is Not This by Jansen;Making a Living Without a Job by Winter, and a cute one that gives you inspiration and is a light read - How Much Joy can you Stand?

excellent true story of a man transformed from being the right hand man to Richard butler to an activist against that hateful group. yes the grammar and spelling isn't perfect, as it was written in a prison cell.

Do you know what drives a person to racism?
Do you know what is the root cause of racism?
"Ignorance" is not the correct answer, it's a well rehearsed answer.
Fear is the correct answer.
The more critical someone is the more insecure they are.
The formatting is fixed.

Passed the PHR today! Used only this book. I read it from cover to cover, and used the supplementary online materials and assessment tests. There were definitely some questions I was unfamiliar with on the test, but overall, I recommend this book for at least a part of your PHR study.

I agree with so many of the other reviews on this book. Great study tool!! I took the exam yesterday and PASSED!! The first material I was using to study does not even compare with this! Definitely use this as one (if not the only) your study guides.

Not Sufficient for SPHR But a Good Resource

If you are preparing for the SPHR, this book is not enough. I used this book (self-study) and bought the SPHR 150-question practice test from HRCI two weeks prior to the test and passed. This book is great to gain most of the knowledge needed to pass the exam, but it won't prepare you for the SPHR exam questions. The reason for this is that its practice tests are more like what you'd see on the PHR and not the SPHR. SPHR questions are more analytical and real life scenarios as opposed to just knowledge-based. The questions are MUCH harder and many times 2 answers look correct (from my experience). If I didn't purchase the HRCI practice tests, I'm not sure I would have passed as I wouldn't have been prepared for the question format (please also note that many resources that claim to provide free SPHR practice tests are in reality PHR ones). Some of the questions on these HRCI practice tests actually appeared on the exam but were worded differently. Finally, some of the subjects weren't covered in this book to the extent that they should have been. For example, the SPHR had many questions on the mergers/acquisitions process, which wasn't in the book at all. So if you're looking for a good resource for SPHR, this would be a start but I would strongly recommend looking at HRCI tools as although they are pricey, they will prepare you well.

Wouldn't recommend for a content single woman...

This book wasn't at all what I expected, and I quit at day 11. I don't feel this book is good as a stand alone devotional. First it tells a short narrative (2-3 sentences, really) of how Mrs. Carpenter desired to be married, was envious of engaged/married women, etc, but she constantly says "if you have read my other book" in order to go more in depth with the short story so I felt she was pushing purchasing of that book. I feel there should have been a strict journaling topic for each day. After day 9, I realized I didn't desire marriage in such a way that it consumed me as Mrs. Carpenter seemed to. This devotional isn't horrible. I did have a long overdue convo with a male family member, and I did recommend it to a cousin who desires marriage in the way this devotional implies. She bought the book, so I say it's a win for Mrs. Carpenter, but this book isn't something I would recommend for a single woman who is content with singleness and isn't constantly pining for a husband to complete her life. This devotional helped me realize I was doing just fine focusing on me, should continue to do so, and everything will continue to fall into place as it has. Hope this helps.
