About the Author
Ari Berman is a political correspondent for The Nation and an investigative journalism Fellow at the Nation Institute. His writing has also appeared in The New York Times and Rolling Stone, and he is a frequent commentator on MSNBC and NPR. His first book, Herding Donkeys: The Fight to Rebuild the Democratic Party and Reshape American Politics, was published in 2010. He lives in New York City.

Essential, riveting and vivid.

Give Us the Ballot is the history of how the Voting Rights Act came into being, took hold and changed America. It's also the story of the conservative undertow that contested the law from its beginning, recognized its value in shifting the polarities of our two major parties via "The Southern Strategy" and then launched a counterrevolution during the Reagan Administration set on undermining the law before the nation's changing demographics could pose a serious threat to the right's southern and rural hegemony.

You'll recognize many of the stars of the conservative effort to limit voting rights -- from William Rehnquist to John Roberts to Ted Cruz. But it's the life of John Lewis who provides the through line of Berman's spirited narrative. From Selma to Shelby, Lewis is a participant and a witness to the massive changes he helped force and the backlash those changes sparked. No testimony is more stirring or crucial to understanding the stakes -- both moral and political -- involved in providing America's most vulnerable citizens access to the ballot.

“How many of you are going to leave here and remember the blood of the martyrs?” William J. Barber, the architect of North Carolina’s Moral Mondays movement that rose up in part to oppose the right’s attack on voting rights, asked a crowd in 2014.

Berman’s book is asking us that same question.

Did he really?

I don't believe that this reviewer read the book. If he did, he was given an advanced copy for being a book blogger or one of the other perks for getting a review copy. Whether or not, the book is not about showing/proving social security numbers in order to vote the the United States, which actually reinforces my belief that the reviewer did not read the book, since that is the only complaint he has, and it's weak. In addition, a reviewer who received an advanced copy would know how weak the review is.

I am currently reading the book, and I listened to the NPR Fresh Air interview with the author. Read before you decide. And, if you are interested in historical background that reflects current events, the book enlightens. I am in process of discovering how phony the US looks,espousing its values while finding ways to thwart those values in order for a political view to prevail over another. My discovery is not limited to the subject of this book.

Although I am far from finished, I will give the book 5 stars, since I can't put it down, and I have to go to work .

A powerful and provocative look at attempts to limit the right to vote

This book provides a superb history of the events leading to the Voting Rights Act, and the history of the impact of the Voting Rights Act, including countless efforts to limit the voting or impact of minority voters. The book also makes clear that the impetus behind voter fraud concerns and restrictions on early voting and registration is really an attempt to limit the voting of the poor and minority voters. Royal Masset, the former executive director of the Texas Republican party said that "anyone who says that a lack of voter ID won't discriminate against otherwise legal minority voters is lying" and said voter ID laws were "sheer racism" designed to suppress Democratic voters (at 259-260). Cutbacks in early voting hours were defended by the Republican party chair in Ohio who said we "shouldn't contort the voting process to accommodate the urban-read African-American-voter-turnout machine" (at 264).

About the Author

Michael Radtke is a professor for risk management and insurance at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts. At the same time, he is an adviser of Willis Towers Watson for the Risk Consulting Practice in Cologne. From joining Cologne Re in 1988, he held a number of positions as a non-life actuary and consultant. In 1998, he founded the actuarial consulting firm MRS of which he was a managing director during 10 years. He holds a PhD in mathematics from the University of Siegen.

Klaus D. Schmidt is a professor for actuarial mathematics at Dresden University of Technology. He graduated in mathematics at the University of Zurich and holds a PhD from the University of Mannheim. His research focuses on probability theory and statistics and their applications in non-life actuarial mathematics. He is engaged in the professional education programs of the German and Austrian Actuarial Associations and has been a visiting professor at the Universities of Salzburg and Strasbourg.

My wife is using this book to help her get ready for college. She is a native Spanish-speaker and can talk just fine in English. This book answers many of the English grammar questions that we native speakers just can't seem to answer. She has tried several books and this is by far the one she enjoys using. I picked this one because it seemed to offer what other ESL books I have used in teaching did. It is adequate, but not really as good. It's progression is awkward to me. There are a lot of good things about it, the lessons are adequate for their purpose, but the way it advances leaves me wishing it was building more on the past lesson rather than feeling we were starting out on a completely new tack.

A great addition to text books.

I use these cards as a study guide and a reference tool. If the book you are using doesn't explain things well, these cards will help you to understand some complicated concepts by using great graphics. By using the graphics on these cards along with my text book I could easily visualize what was being explained. The cards are much more portable than a large text book, so I was able to take the ones I needed with me to study anywhere.
They are easy to refer back to now that my class is over. If I need to look a certain concept up, I can see all of the vital information easier and faster than going through all the extra information that a text book provides.

Not as handy as the Netter's anatomy flash cards but still pretty essential in my success in physiology. It's tough to put a lot of physiology concepts into this sort of paper flash card format.

I use these more than the book, they have numbers without the answers on one side so you learn the parts and can turn over to verify you are correct. It has a little more info than an into course requires, but the advanced classes are yet to come and I love these cards. You can select the exact ones you need to work on for each chapter or lab and leave the rest at home in the box. Love them!

The difference between The First Five Pages and most books on writing is that the others are written by teachers and writers. This one comes from a literary agent--one whose clients include Pulitzer Prize nominees, New York Times bestselling authors, Pushcart Prize recipients, and American Book Award winners. Noah Lukeman is not trying to impart the finer points of writing well. He wants to teach you "how to identify and avoid bad writing," so that your manuscript doesn't come boomeranging back to you in that self-addressed, stamped envelope. Surprise: Agents and editors don't read manuscripts for fun; they are looking for reasons to reject them. Lukeman has arranged his book "in the order of what I look for when trying to dismiss a manuscript," starting with presentation and concluding with pacing and progression. Each chapter addresses a pitfall of poor writing--overabundance of adjectives and adverbs, tedious or unrealistic dialogue, and lack of subtlety to name just a few--by identifying the problem, presenting solutions, giving examples (one wishes these weren't quite so obvious), and offering writing exercises. It's a little bizarre to think about approaching your work as would an agent, but if you are serious about getting published, you may as well get used to it. Plus, Lukeman has plenty of solid advice worth listening to. Stop reading after Chapter 6

Noah Lukeman's book starts out strong with a new slant on much of the writing advice already out there: less is more, and most is even less than that. The exercises in the adjective and adverbs chapter are so helpful that they completely transformed the first chapter of my manuscript. Thanks, Mr. Lukeman.
However, once beyond his excellent treatments on modifiers, sound, comparison, and style, one becomes acutely aware that like writing, editing is a highly subjective field. Many of the techniques that he advocates for sentence construction and dialogue directly contradicts the advice of other well-credentialed editors. This is where a strong sense of the strengths of your own writing, the conventions of your genre, and the preferences of your agent or editor is going to help you, and where "The First Five Pages" will fall short.
Rather than strictly being a "how not to get rejected off the bat" guide as the cover blurb claims, "The First Five Pages" also endeavors to show you how to write the best novel you can. That's fine. But if you take Lukeman too seriously, you might come to the conclusion that he would rather you not write at all than have a single word out of place. It comes as no surprise, them, that towards the end of the book (and prominent on his literary agency's webpage), we find Lukeman's particular bias: "Ovid, the Roman poet, said one should wait nine years after finishing one's work before seeking publication. Here lies the difference between someone writing for money and a writer."
If it's your goal to win a Pulitzer Prize, that's an admirable sentiment. For the rest of us making our livings as writers, who want to write great stories that make people think or feel, you are well advised to pick and choose from Lukeman's advice.
If you can only buy one book on writing, I instead recommend Donald Maass's excellent book "How to Write the Breakout Novel" which not only focuses on good writing, but the themes and techniques which can make a novel a best-seller. Additionally, "Self-Editing for Fiction Writers" by Renni Browne and Dave King gives some excellent tips, though they disagree with Lukeman on some key points.
My best advice is to read as many of these books as you can: take to heart those points on which everyone agrees, internalize the rest, and just write.

A swing and a miss

Noah Lukeman offers what every beginning writer needs: insider information. As a literary agent with a stable of award-winning authors, Lukeman offers to dish the publishing dirt that will ensure anyone's manuscript rises to the top of any agent or publisher's stack.

But does the book live up to the marketing?

Lukeman covers the basics that are currently in vogue:

* Delivering a professional-looking manuscript

* Limiting the number of adjectives and adverbs, making certain the few that are used are punchy and unusual

* Verbalizing a manuscript to screen for its overall sound

* Choosing original metaphors and similes

* Avoiding a precious or contrived style

* Balancing realistic dialogue with narration

* Punching up ho-hum dialogue

* Driving the story through dialogue

* Cutting out melodrama

* Simplifying complex character interaction

* Showing, not telling

* Perfecting narrative and POV

* Creating realistic characters

* Crafting hooks without being manipulative

* Learning subtlety

* Maintaining a consistent tone

* Keeping the manuscript's focus

* Devising believable settings that involves all five senses

* Pacing the work through a natural progression

While this is an excellent list of issues to address in a writing book, the problem comes from the trade size and the under-200 page length. For Lukeman to cover these topics to any depth beyond absolute beginner stage, he needs at least fifty percent more content per issue.

There are other problems that limit the usefulness of this book. The examples of bad writing are so blatant that their usefulness is questionable. The advice on how to fix writing problems is okay, but never transcends beginning-level wisdom. Any writer hoping to do the very thing Lukeman promises--get that manuscript published--could do worse, but with so many other outstanding writing books out there, why stick with one that's merely fair? Considering the author's pedigree, his book is a letdown.

For any writer who has never picked up a book on writing, this one's acceptable. For the rest of us, though, consider looking for something more weighty (such as "Stein on Writing.")

This was a great book and essential if you're a writer hoping to put out a book. Whether you want to go with an agent, publisher, or want to publish on your own, you need to read this book. It has concise examples of common problems that cause books to be rejected with a good explanation and clear examples. It highlights problems that many writers have and should be aware of going forward in their careers. Regardless of what path you take, you should learn these lessons and make your writing more readable for editors, publishers, and readers.

Betrayal

I liked the historical aspect and detail of this novel; it moved along well and kept my interest all the way; I also like the decent way the sexual areas were handled. I don't like novels that include the vulgarity that seems to prevail now.

fun historical romance

In 1122, William Norris dies in combat after betraying an ally. He leaves behind his pregnant wife Lady Katherine Stanfield, who would prefer the odious man, went to hell, but for the sake of her soon to be born child she gives him a Christian burial. Less than two weeks later, Katherine gives birth to twins with her daughter dying in childbirth. At about the same time Lord Ranulf invades the keep with plans to make Katherine his wife. She flees leaving behind her dead child so Ranulf will not know that a son lives.

Her loyal Commander Sir Guy takes her son into hiding while she asks her former betrothed De Lauren for help. He agrees on the condition she marry him right then. He retakes Stanfield keep, but the slaughter of innocent people and the destruction of property are horrifying. De Lauren buries her daughter because he does not want the woman he loves but mistrusts to see that Ranulf decapitated the infant. As Katherine realizes she too loves her spouse like she did when she broke off their engagement five years ago, Ranulf plots to assassinate De Lauren and make sure his enemy's loyal brother Stephen thinks Katherine betrayed them again.

Though Ranulf is a too over the top psychopath (asks his late wife as he literally bled her dry), medieval romance readers will welcome this fine twelfth century tale more so because of the hero, who seems so realistic especially his code of justice. The excitement in the entertaining story line resides in anticipating the confrontation and learning why Katherine broke off with De Lauren and defied her father to marry an odious Norris. Karen Fenech writes a fun historical romance.

A Midieval Miss Congeniality

Karen Fenech is a creative genius when it comes to writing historical romantic suspense. Betrayal took me on an unforgettable adventure that stirred my heart and dazzled my imagination.

Lady Katherine Stanfield is strong, passionate, and one of the most likable and believable characters I've met in a very long time. Kind of a Midieval Miss Congeniality. The dialogue was authentic to the Renaissance era, the action and drama were perfectly weaved together to make me feel completely surrounded and swept away in this intriguing and exciting journey of Knights, Lords, Ladies, and Betrayal.
