About the Author
Patrick F. Cannon is the author of several books on architecture, including Hometown Architect: The Complete Buildings of Frank Lloyd Wright in Oak Park and River Forest, Illinois ; Prairie Metropolis: Chicago and the Birth of a New American Home ; and Louis Sullivan: Creating a New American Architecture, all published by Pomegranate. He has also led tours of Chicago-area architecture for nearly forty years.


James Caulfield has been a commercial and advertising photographer in downtown Chicago for thirty years. His photographs have been featured by the Society of Architectural Historians, the Glessner House and Clarke House museums, and the Unity Temple Restoration Foundation. Caulfield provides ongoing site documentation for the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust.

Flawed but hugely informative book

This book presents history in a way that is easy to understand and flows with a smoothness that other world history books and even classes seem unable. Gorgeous color photos and a very fair and objective representation of world history make reading this cover to cover fun and exceptionally informative.

However, the book does contain far more typos than would be expected from a scholarly source. Most of the typos appear to be in the first half of the book, though, so the minor irritation alleviates in later chapters. Another flaw with the book is that the binding seems precariously weak for such a heavy book. If you store this book standing upright on a shelf, the weight of the pages will probably pull some of the binding off of the top of the inner spine, as it has happened with my copy. Definitely more of a coffee table book than a bookshelf one.

Overall, I would still recommend this to anyone who wants to read a world history book.

Great way to brush up on your history

I bought this book because I am trying to brush up on my world history. After reading this book, I have a much deeper insight into world news topics that I hear about on TV. History was definitely not my favorite subject in school, and it was not until I was an adult that I came to appreciate it. This book fills in a lot of gaps in my history knowledge. I love how it very succinctly covers every major historical event. It gives you a foundation on each event, and if you want to dive deeper, you can branch off into Wikipedia or other verbose media on the topic. Having the groundwork laid by this book, provides you with an easier transition. The only negative I have is that some of the chapters were written with the assumption that you already have knowledge of the event. Because of this, some of the chapters are not an easy read like a novel, and will require you to reread paragraphs over again to connect the dots.

Femalia is a wonderful book illustrating the many variations of vulva. If any girl or woman thinks her vulva is deformed, ugly, etc. this book should help them understand that each vulva is unique and beautiful. The photography was excellent.

Great book for education and teaching & showing the normal variances in women's vulvas

I have two books that I really love to use with clients when teaching about 'what is normal' when considering women's bodies, and particularly when discussing sexuality and vulvas, and this is one of them.

For teaching, education, or your own knowledge of what is 'normal' for womens vulvas, Femalia , as well as The Yoni book, The Yoni: Sacred Symbol of Female Creative Power offer realistic representations of vulvas. The Yoni book in general is a positive, woman honoring elucidation of the female form and includes art, sculpture and natural formations that represent or resemble a woman's vulva as well. I really like the Yoni book for it's 'pro' woman, reverential perspective.

However, for a book that is great for teaching and solely features realistic, color photographs of vulva's Femalia is the best choice. Femalia has full color images, one per page, and most have pubic hair, some are pierced, and women of all different skin colors are included.

Personally, I think all mothers with daughters, (as well as anyone working with women and teens) should have them both. Openly discussing variances and allowing girls/teens to see what is normal will help them to have more realistic concepts of women's bodies (as well as helping girls to have a more positive self image as they grow up).

Great great great, important book!

What a wonderful book! it's small but powerful, I think it would be a great addition for anyone's library and to help teach young women about their bodies. I loved that these pictures were of women who were NOT sexually stimulated. Also, that many of them were natural. I'm shocked when I hear a women and she doesn't know what her vagina looks like. Sad. What's that saying, "The more you know....knowledge is power.
Excellent book!

A vital tribute to an architectural genius

"Frank Lloyd Wright's Usonian Houses" is well-presented introduction to an important phase in the career of this legendary architect. Author John Sergeant has combined an insightful text with detailed floor plans and photographs of the Usonian homes themselves. The result is a book that serves equally well for light browsing and intense study.
The book is not without flaws. Some of the floor plans are so tiny that they are difficult to analyze. And the floor plans have no captions labeling each individual room; the reader is left to decipher the plans on his/her own. But these drawbacks aside, this is an excellent work.
Sergeant has truly captured the innovative power of Wright's genius. Look at the clustered circles of the Jester house project, the interlocking hexagons of the Bazett house, or the bold "solar-hemicycle" of the second Jacobs house, and you will get a sense of Wright's remarkable vison. Virtually every page brings a stunning image or insight. If you are fascinated by Wright's work in home architecture, you will love this book.

Nightmare

I asked a Usonian "fanatic" about buying this book, and he told me that he owned it, but "never could get through it." I bought it anyway, and now I see what he means. Excerpt from page 62: "Symmetrical implications of the wig-wam roof-form of the living area are immediately combated by the off-center core and built-in seat and table."

WHAT? After five minutes of staring at the floor plan, I finally deduce that this must be some reference to a group of unmarked "things" there in what must be the living room. Of course, nothing is marked, and I still can't be sure what this sentence means because there are no useful photos or sketches to clarify the point. Lack of decent illustrations makes this book a nightmare to read. Another example, Page 68: "... utility... sensations...and...materials all make the Pew house, for me, the greatest of Wright's late career." This is accompanied by a single 3" x 5" high contrast, B&W photo of the house from a distance, partially obscured by trees. The author calls it the greatest work of Wright's career, and it is impossible to tell what it looks like.

Thank goodness I also bought "The Frank Lloyd Wright Companion" so I can actually see some decent photos and floorplans. This book could just as well be written in Braille.

A Good Vision of the Man, Poor Visions of His Work

Sergeant has made a wonderful and complete effort to balance both the technical information about the famous Usonian houses with the very concept of Usonia and how Wright envisioned the possibilities of what organic architecture could become. At the risk of becoming too reverent to the architect, the book attempts to cover Wright's somewhat anachronistic philosophical views as well as paints an idealised picture of the man. The book is lacking greatly in visual aids. The author takes pains to ensure that the ingenuity and the complexity of the design and construction of the homes is understood, but this is backed up with poor illustration. The homes are displayed in black and white photos that lack the neccessary detail needed to understand what their literary descriptions mean. The floor plans are small, undimensioned, and are not clearly captioned. This coupled with close in photography of specific features of the homes without showing the whole, is frustrating. The literature is complete and well ordered, but a reader just entering the realm of FLLW would be well advised to find a more picturesque book on this topic before diving into Sergeant's text.
