About the Author

Robert Simmons, Jr. started programming when floppy disks were reallyfloppy and 64 kilobytes of RAM was considered state of the art. Fromhis early days of programming BASIC and Logo on an Apple IIe, headvanced through Pascal and C to arrive in the object oriented realmof C++. When Java first came out, he knew that the infant languagewould become a serious player amongst corporations; Robert learnedJava and began using it as his primary language for programming in1997. Although Robert is American, he lives and works as a SeniorSoftware Architect in Germany.

Misleading Title

I gave this book 2 stars more for content than for anything else. When I saw 'Hardcore' in the title, I thought the book would have more advanced programming techniques; optimization, advanced use of interfaces, etc.
What I found was a book with information that is mostly either common sense or something that should have been learned in computer science 101. I've been programming in Java for a little over four years and there is nothing new in this book for me.
On the up side, the book read fairly well. If you don't know Java and are fairly new to programming you might find the book helpful. But if you are looking for anything "hardcore", you won't find it here. In my opinion, it should have been named something like "Java, Best Practices" or something similar.

Newer prints of this book are better...

I purchased a copy of this book a couple of months ago and was fortunate to obtain a more recent printing than the earlier reviewers probably had. There were still some errors and typos of various levels of severity, but quite a few fewer than the earlier printings. This, together with the O'Reilly errata page for the book and a small bit of work on my part involving the use of scissors and a glue stick, gave me a book which has become very useful to me at work. Hopefully, even more recent printings will be even better.

These annoyances aside, I am very happy with the book and what I was able to learn from it.

Nice intro to slightly advanced Java...

The title "Hardcore Java" is definitely overkill. A better one may be "Stuff a new Java developer might not know yet".
This book is full is little nuggets of "oh, good idea" and "oh, I never knew that". But don't expect to be a guru after reading it by any means. Lean towards 'Effective Java Programming Language Guide' for a thorough, advanced discussion of the Java language.
For it's price, it's not bad, it seems relatively cheap compared to many books on the subject. It's easily a weekend read as well.

At last! TAB for learning classical guitar! And you can play without fingernails!

Paul Henry's is the book that has most encouraged me to start learning, above all for revealing that yes, you CAN play classical guitar without nails...With that (medical!) roadblock out of the way it seemed easy to slip into the earliest stages of study using this book, and the new TAB edition sure helps smooth things along.

I found the selection of pieces the book is based around appealing, too. And the audio download instead of CD is very convenient.

P.S. The 'nails' revelation (which comes quietly in the appendix) excited me enough to go searching for sheet music of pieces I am yearning to play, and the attraction of renaissance Scottish lute music led me on to find the two 'Scottish Guitar' books of nail-less proponent Rob MacKillop. I know I'm being reckless, but I'm also going to try and graft his interesting ideas about right hand fingering onto Paul Henry's method. MacKillop also gives useful tips on nail-less technique in his books, and he has a couple of YouTube videos on technique which I find essential. Another revelation through this connection is that Fernando Sor, whose work is a pillar of classical guitar education, played without nails and used this different, actually more naturalistic, right hand fingering. And - gasp! - even Tarrega himself abandoned nails around 1902.

P.P.S. It's Rob MacKillop's first Scottish book (without the CD) that has the most information. There's a big introduction written for beginners who just want to 'jump in'. (His second book has a bit more to say on technique, and has a wider range of difficulty in its selection than the uniformly intermediate level of the first book.) Actually he has more precise instructions - and exercises! - on basic hand placement and fingering technique, for both hands, than any other book I've seen (every piece is fully annotated with his recommended right-hand fingering, for example). So MY unique method is to graft Paul Henry's progressive study onto Rob MacKillop's foundation. The point is that this right hand fingering, whatever it may cost in technical prowess, does make it easier to achieve a singing style of playing. It also saves years of rigorous training devoted to levelling out the different strengths natural to each finger. And spare years are in short supply...

P.P.P.S. Having worked through Paul Henry's book, without delaying over every detail of musicianship, the best thing I found to do was go straight to Ben Bolt's two volumes of progressively arranged classical solos. It feels good so far as an all-round technique builder, and I intend changing it up with my other sources. What I'm looking for now is a simple, practical and short introduction to harmony, improvisation, and ornamentation. Many of the renaissance and baroque pieces I'm interested in come in a bare bones form, and often seem to cry out for expanded treatment.

This is the best beginning classical method book I've seen. It's very systematic, going thru all the aspects of music notation while learning the notes in first position at the same time. It doesn't push too fast, but at a pace anyone can handle, especially with the tab. It has selections from some of the great guitar composers, so in a surprisingly short time, you are actually playing real classical guitar pieces. The page layouts are pleasing and add to the accessibility of the lessons. There is, however, one suggestion I would make when someone buys this; and that is have it rebound with a spiral binding. This will allow the book to lay flat on any surface. I took mine to a Fed Ex Kinko's and for about five dollars they did a great job. Hope this helps.

About the Author
Peter Morville is a pioneer of the fields of information architecture and user experience. He advises such clients as AT&T, Cisco, Harvard, IBM, Macy's, the Library of Congress, and the National Cancer Institute. He has delivered conference keynotes in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. His work has been covered by Business Week, The Economist, NPR, and The Wall Street Journal. Peter lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan with his wife, two daughters, and a dog named Knowsy. A book about everything

This is a marvelous, insightful book, one of those books that's difficult to categorize, because it's about everything. More specifically, it's about how everything is connected and how hard it is to organize things, by one of the foremost thinkers in the world of organizing information. It reminds me of the essays of Montaigne. Great thinking, from one of the great thinkers of our time.

Systems thinking for information architects - IA for systems thinkers

This book brings systems thinking and information architecture together, in a way that encourages you to think deeply while being readily applicable to your work. Peter has done his research and will introduce you to Donella Meadows, Peter Senge and other main thinkers, but he is also including a very personal angle. As someone who has been learning about systems thinking for a few years, I really enjoy how Peter relates the topic to information architecture. Highly recommended for both beginners and experts!

There is a great concept here, but the book reads like a stream of random thoughts and quotes. Ironic that the premise of the book is that we need to be better at connecting all of this, because it read like a bunch of ideas all jumbled together without a surprising, insightful story told.

This is an excellent book. It provides a detailed examination of issues that face the fields of physical education and sport in worldwide environments. It is an outstanding textbook for physical teachers and coaches, who work in preparing the youth for their growth and prosperity in society. About the Author
Jepkorir Rose Chepyator-Thomson is a professor in the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Georgia. Her teaching and research interests include public policy, global diversity in sport, and gender, race, and ethnicity in physical education. She is the author of sixty publications including one book, African Women and Globalization, and several chapters and research articles. She has appeared on 20/20 and NPR.

Shan-Hui Hsu is associate professor in the Office of Physical Education at National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan. Her teaching and research interests include gender studies in sport, popular culture in media technology, and physical education and sport pedagogy. She is the author of Identity, Difference and Voicing: Pedagogical Praxis in Gender Studies (2009), Sociology of Sport (2012), and seven research articles.
